Dear Orchestra Students and Parents,
When you walk into the Orchestra classroom, you will see the Classroom Rules posted clearly for all to see. Consequences of breaking these rules are posted as well. We follow these rules and consequences to insure that every student has the opportunity to learn without unnecessary distraction and disruption.
Orchestra is an amazing class filled with students of ALL ability levels - from beginner on up to very advanced players. Therefore, we all need to treat each other as a family, and build each other up as performers, students, musicians, and leaders. Students, if you see someone struggling with a bowing or a fingering, or with keeping their music organized, offer to help! A smile and a kind word goes a long way! :-)
Please read these rules and expectations together, and sign the Google Form to agree.

Grading System. The following categories are used to determine students' grades.
Daily Preparation and Participation.
Students are required to be on time and prepared for all classes. Playing assessments (either formal or informal) will be given often to check for understanding. Students are expected to play to the best of their ability every day in class. In addition to in-class work, students should be practicing their instruments outside of class on a regular basis. The whole orchestra sounds better when everybody does their part by practicing outside of class!
Playing Tests, Quizzes, and Written work.
Regular assessments (written or playing) will be used to evaluate students’ comprehension of class material.
Concert Attendance.
Our concerts are the final product of our work together. In order for our groups to succeed, everyone must participate. If we are missing some of our members, the music will not sound the same. Therefore, all Orchestra students are required to perform at our concerts. Students are also expected to stay until the end of the concert out of respect for all the musicians who are performing. Please add the concert dates to your family calendar. Any conflicts MUST be communicated with your teacher at least one month before the concert. Excused absences include illness the day/night of the concert (excused from school that day) or family emergency. Please schedule vacations around concerts. If you have a pre-planned vacation that conflicts with a concert, please contact Mrs. Mansky right away. Students will receive the opportunity to complete an alternate assignment for a missed concert.
**Please refer to the 2019-20 CONCERT DATES & FIELD TRIP INFO tab at the top of the page for details.**
***Please notify your teacher ASAP if you have any conflicts or questions!!!***
Lessons.
Lessons are essential for students to receive individualized and small-group instruction that is specific to their instrument. Lessons are required for all students EXCEPT if a student takes weekly private lessons outside of school. Lessons (15 minutes, every other week) are scheduled during students' lunch or study hall. Students will receive their lesson schedule by about the 3rd week of school. Lessons attendance is tracked through the Live School Point system, rather than Gradebook. Students receive (or lose) Responsibility Points for attending (or not attending) lessons.
